"The Art of Japanese Cloisonne Enamel"
By Kiwicollector
A scholarly and thorough publication by an enthusiast who obviously likes to dig deep for information and detail. For me this is the most comprehensive and useful of any publication on this subject to date. An extraordinary work that should be on the shelves of collectors and enthusiasts around the world. Very highly recommended.

Excellent for very specific purposes, very limited utility. Bottom 10% quality overall.

Ideal for those who want a good legal dissertation with references to prior comments and publications, but no original scientific studies, overall logical synthesis, or expert analysis. Many signatures that can be useful, lots of interesting tidbits (all referenced, but the accuracy of the references not verified by independent study). No differentiation between images of authentic signatures, and forgeries. Poor quality, small and low resolution illustrations, not color correct, completely lacking the usual image and data supplements used in good quality technical books and studies. Lots of details that are threaded together with some linkages, but not in a logical, overall and consistent conceptual picture that conforms to the usual standards for scholarship (art, antiques, social sciences, whatever) or scientific analysis.
The Paperback edition has some unusual differences from the hardbound, not usually seen in books of this type. The paper quality is much lower, for both the text and plates or images. The image have been enhanced for contrast, either digitally or by printing process in the paperback edition. As a result, the black and white images are sharper and clearer, but lacking in fine detail. The color image have much greater color contrast, with loss of sharpness. This makes color variations more obvious, but also blotchy and renders the colors even more inaccurate.
Overall, the book follows the format of a legal brief, but does not conform to usual standards for scientific or scholarly studies (no independent verification of references, no basic scientific or technical studies validated by conventional scientific methods, no scholarly work by standards of either art history or archeology). By current standards for technical publications, imaging is very cheaply produced (resolution image quality, detail), no attempt to use the now-standard digital media supplements to fill the gaps, but keep the costs of the book moderate. Unfortunately as well, those images that are there, are not linked with the text effectively, rendering them very difficult to use in association with the text.
The book likely will be useful to the basic collector who desires a reference for signatures or wants to say "I have one of those" with comparison to images that are too low quality for accurate comparison, or those interested in scattered tidbits of information that may or may not be correct, but can be used in association with other sources to advantage. The book will be useful only to readers who already have a large assortment of the objects on hand already, have at least one or two good books on the subject with adequate illustrations, and have a specific use for the information provided, despite the other deficits. It is not useful as an introduction, if only due to the images, or the lack of a good cohesive overall picture of the subject that ties things together or places the subject into a better perspective historically. For the collector who is at less than a "past-master" level of expertise, the content may be useful, but must be used with caution as all content is referenced only to past statements of others, but not independently verified by usual scientific scholarship and studies.
I did not buy the book from Amazon, but have read it essentially cover to cover. It is one of about 50 in my company library on the subject, and is one of over 100 I've read on this and related subjects. Overall quality is in the lower 10%. The interesting tidbits place it above the lowest 1%. The book could be "evolved" into a very good or superb book on the subject, but would require extensive rewriting, a great deal of new photography or high quality image enhancement and color correction, and either a far higher quality of image printing or use of high quality digital media that are linked with the text. Skilled editing for subject and presentation, and "linkage" of illustrations with text also would be desirable.

An Unexpected Discovery
By VTC
To an artist whose cultural root goes back to Asia, the new book "The Art of Japanese Cloisonne Enamel" by Fredric T. Schneider is both transporting and enriching. Compared with the largely black and white images in another favorite book--Chinoiserie: The Vision of Cathay by Hugh Honour, the sophisticated color images of the delicate and sometimes, humorous birds and fish on the enamel in the new book are a testimony of the brilliant innovation of the digital age. They generate a visual intimacy of the esoteric subject. They are a feast to the eye. Reading the text by the collector and independent scholar led to further surprises.
The research work and interviews in Japan by Mr. Schneider over 16 years led to discoveries in unexpected ways. The background of the enamel artists--many former samurais--was mesmerizing. The last pages that reproduced 290 marks and signatures on the enamel in Japanese/Chinese characters with notes in English by the author offered key knowledge for authentication of the enamel in discussion.
In his introduction, Mr. Schneider described the sensual pleasures of the subject. He said, "Their coolness to the touch can offer a pleasing sensation and a contrast to plastic, wood and other materials." His voice so appropriately reflects the texture of the jewel-like enamel that he lives with.
