In this comprehensive parent-child guide to eating behaviors (from infancy through adolescence) the authors show parents how to put an end to the eating battles which confront them on a daily basis. This book will help parent and child put food back into its rightful place. Previously published as Preventing Childhood Eating Problems (featured in McCalls, Parenting Magazine, Sesame Street Magazine, Newsweek, New York Times, CNN, The Oprah Show, and many other T.V. and radio shows), Kids, Carrots, and Candy has a new Introduction that addresses society's current obsession with the "obesity crisis," as well as updated language throughout the book.
This insightful book offers a common-sense, relaxed approach to healthy eating based on the method of self-demand feeding. Contrary to the belief that children must be forced to eat what's good for them, to clean their plates, and to avoid all sweets, Kids, Carrots, and Candy presents evidence that children will naturally self-regulate their eating if rigid rules are not imposed upon them. By trusting natural hunger cycles and letting children choose when, what, and how much they eat, food becomes demystified, and a lifetime of fears, fights, and anxieties around food, weight, and diet are eliminated.

This is a gem!
By michele
This is a great book. The theory that this book encourages is sometimes called *intuitive eating*. I have introduced this method of eating to my family, and I already see wonderful results. It is empowering for our children to learn to listen to their bodies. By respecting our children, and trusting them to know what their bodies need, we stop the power struggles about food in our families. In addition, we give our children a wonderful gift: a healthy relationship with food. Buy the book!

Very helpfull approach
By A Customer
I thought that the book was an excellent guide, not only in dealing with preventing eating problems in children, but to assist myself with eating problems that I have struggled with since I was a child. The approach advises to legalize all foods for your family and to not impose restrictions on your children because all it will do is backfire on you and they will want it more. The book is helpful because it deals with feeding from birth and up, and also shows how one can implement this plan with older children.

this book changed my life and my parenting
By fisch
This book is on my top 10 parenting books list. A huge part of parenting is about feeding and nourishing your child, and there is a lot of information and intensity about what you are feeding your children.
When I started with my first child, now age 16, I had the best of intentions. No sugar, no candy, no junk food, just healthy food, etc. I was constantly stressed when we were out of the house by well-meaning people offering lollypops and cookies. Grandparents, other relatives, other friends... it was a constant vigilance. My daughter was very social and a lot of socialization takes place around eating.
When my second daughter was about a year old, somebody gave me this book to read. Wow. What intelligent, logical points. But.. could it really work? Really? Not have "bad foods" and "good foods?" Give my children complete and utter free reign in their food choices?
I'm a bit of an experimenter, so I gave it a try. I've been doing this for ten years, have five children, and I never looked back. (Though people have complained that my children are unbribable with food and are not that impressed with dessert.) Anything they ask for goes on the shopping list.
It is a wonderful, sensible, free, healthy, enjoyable way to live. People learn to listen to what foods their bodies want. They eat moderately. They eat healthfully. They enjoy a wide range of foods. I am so grateful to the writers of this book, who have changed my life for the better with their wisdom.
